| Welcome to First Grade |
| A Note to Parents from Ms. Villa: First Grade is a great year! This is the year we learn to read. I cannot stress too much the importance of reading nightly to your children. All too soon they will not let you, so take advantage of this age to do so. It soon becomes apparent which students practice reading outside of class and which students do not. If you do nothing else this year... READ. Not only do we become fluent readers, we also become authors. First graders write wonderful stories. Part of our writing requires spelling, so we develop good spelling and phonics skills. In math, children will learn to add and subtract. We will even add three numbers, write fact families, work with money, time, fractions, and more. We will be taking timed math tests several times as part of the curriculum. Check out the links on this page, especially the links for math and phonics, and try some with your children for fun and practice. California Content Standards |
